The Purpose of Digestion

The digestive system is designed to help us mechanically and chemically break down food from its whole form all the way down to a cellular size so that it can be used to provide nutrients and energy for the body. Anytime there is a breakdown in this process or one of the organs is low functioning it will cause a chain reaction of problems inside of the body. Most of the nutrients we get on a daily basis will be from the foods we eat and if we are not doing a good job of digesting those foods we will experience a host of issues. So if we understand how important digestion is, why is it a topic many don’t speak about?

The digestive process can be broken down into 2 main categories. Absorption and assimilation. Absorption is The process of nutrients moving from the digestive tract (mostly small intestine) into the blood or lymph. Simply put, it’s like you driving to the grocery store buying food and then putting it all away inside the refrigerator and the cabinets. Assimilation is described as the process of the absorbed nutrients being transported, delivered, and integrated into cells and tissues where they are used for energy, repair, and growth. This would be when you take those groceries and actually cook your food and eat it. Both processes work in tandem and both are needed in order for the body to function on a day to day basis.

Story Time

About 3 years ago I found that I was really struggling with sleep, energy, and would slowly gain or maintain my weight, even when I was eating fruits or raw foods. I didn’t understand what was happening because based upon what I was eating I should have been slowly losing fat and had plenty of energy on a daily basis. I decided to get a blood plasma micronutrient test. Upon getting my results a lot of my vitamins and minerals were well within normal range. Seeing as though I don’t eat meat there were a few minerals I was low in that come from primary meat sources. The good thing is that I was going to be able to get them from plant and fruit sources and I didn’t need to add meat back into my diet. Even though my numbers looked decent I still felt something was not quite right. As I begun to dig and do more research I found information on the bowels and how we can consistently be eating the right foods, taking the right supplements but if we are not actually absorbing and using them in the body we can end up still having deficiencies.

Overtime I realized that even though I was eating all the right foods my body was not using them properly. I came across a video that was speaking about juice fasting and how it has the ability to thoroughly clean the small and large intestine and make it much easier for the body to actually absorb and use the nutrients I was giving it. I ended up joining a coaching program and completed a 65 day juice fast. After about 3 weeks I felt amazing. my stomach flattened, my muscles were more defined and I was seeing things come out of me I had never seen before even after doing years of water fasting. My energy was through the roof and I even started lifting and working out while I was doing the fast. I felt so good I just continued until day 65 because I wanted to reach a weight goal. Needless to say my eyes were open to the power of juice fasting. After finishing my juice fast I was able to much more easily maintain my weight and after getting a 2nd micronutrient test I found a lot of my numbers that I was low in before had come up into now normal range! So what happened?

Seeing Muscles I have never seen before, Despite weighing less during phases of water fasting. This was due to a decrease in estrogen and increase in testosterone aka balancing hormones. Which was later confirmed via a Blood Test.

Why did this work?

During the juice fasting process you will cleanse the small intestine, this is where most of your absorption of nutrients will happen. The walls of my intestines were being cleaned like water fasting could never do. So when I would eat foods I would be absorbing more nutrients than I had done before. It was clear to me why this happened. The hydration from drinking the juices had my skin looking like I was wearing makeup, I had almost an unlimited amount of energy and my creativity was through the roof. I had confidence in myself I had never experienced before. I have said time and time again if I had to start my wellness journey all over again I’d start with a long term juice fast and it would make the entire process much easier.

The Solution

If you have any ailment of the body, no matter how big or small there are 2 places you can never go wrong with focusing on cleaning, this is the liver and the bowels. No matter what issue you struggle with you will see either a full reversal or improvement in the symptoms. The digestive system is so important when a baby begins to form in a mothers womb within 3-4 weeks the digestive system begins to take shape.
